Arlington Independent School District (AISD) students recently participated in the citywide Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, with several students earning prestigious scholarships for their creative talents and insightful essays. This annual event, organized by the Arlington Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee and supported by Atmos Energy, awarded $4,500 in scholarships to six deserving high school students from Arlington ISD.
Artistic Excellence on Display

Drake Daniel, a talented student from Lamar High School, was recognized as this year’s art contest winner. Daniel’s exceptional artwork earned him a $1,000 scholarship to support his future college education. His winning design was also prominently featured across promotional materials for the MLK Celebration, including flyers, graphics, and even the commemorative t-shirts for the 2025 event.
Tricia Turner, Daniel’s visual arts teacher at Lamar High School, expressed pride but not surprise at his achievement. “Drake possesses an innate artistic talent,” Turner noted. “He consistently demonstrates a willingness to explore diverse artistic mediums and is always engaged in drawing. It has been a true pleasure to have him in my class.”
Seguin High School also celebrated artistic success with Faustina Nguyen securing second place and a $750 scholarship, and Naveah Ringe achieving third place with a $500 scholarship. Their impressive artwork, alongside Daniel’s, can be viewed on the official Arlington city website.
Essay Contest Spotlights Student Voices
Arlington ISD students swept the essay contest, demonstrating their strong writing skills and thoughtful reflections on Dr. King’s legacy. Dilly Ogunrinde from Arlington Collegiate High School took home the first-place prize, earning a $1,000 scholarship. Aubrey Sia, representing Seguin High School, secured second place and a $750 scholarship, while Evan Gerstenkorn from Martin High School was awarded third place and a $500 scholarship for his compelling essay.

Seguin High School’s success extended beyond individual art and essay achievements. The Seguin Nation Steppers step team showcased their talent and precision, winning first place in the MLK Step Showcase, a highlight of the four-day “Advancing the Dream” celebration. Sam Houston High School’s Top Notch Steppers were recognized for their impressive performance, taking second place in the high school division.
In the junior high category, Ousley Junior High’s Prime Time Divas claimed the top spot, followed by Nichols Junior High Iconic Steppers in second place and Young Junior High’s Elite Eagles in third.
Arlington MLK Celebration Committee: A Legacy of Community Support
The Arlington Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee, established in 1989 and formalized as a nonprofit in 1990, has been a cornerstone of the Arlington community for over three decades. This dedicated committee actively promotes Dr. King’s dream through scholarships for graduating students, community service, and resource provision. The committee’s impactful work is made possible through the support of organizations such as Arlington ISD, the Arlington Ministerial Association, Tarrant County College Southeast Campus, the City of Arlington, and the University of Texas at Arlington.
