Like many others, I opted for the prepaid card option from TaxAct for my 2021 tax refund, lured by the American Express logo on the Serve card. Big mistake. This “service” is nothing short of a scam designed to steal your money and cause immense frustration. Despite receiving my Serve card in the mail and even setting up a PIN, accessing my funds, which the IRS confirmed were sent on May 18th, has been impossible.
Every attempt to check my balance – whether through their phone system, website, or app – results in error messages and card recognition failures. It’s baffling and infuriating, especially when the IRS states your refund is already processed and sent. To add insult to injury, their customer support is non-existent. The phone number listed on the card simply disconnects immediately upon calling.
Do not be deceived by the American Express branding on the Serve prepaid card. It does not equate to a legitimate or reliable service. Steer clear of both TaxAct’s prepaid card refund option and Serve. They are a recipe for financial headaches and stolen funds. You’re better off choosing direct deposit or a paper check to avoid this nightmare.
