Roblox Server Finder: Is Physical Discovery the Right Path?

Developers are making commendable efforts to enhance game discovery on Roblox, and while it’s not a universal fix, these initiatives are appreciated.

However, the current approach of physically navigating an avatar within the game to find new experiences introduces a challenge. This contrasts sharply with the familiar 2D User Interface (UI) system, which utilizes page-based navigation. Many users may find the 2D-UI style more user-friendly and efficient. Long game descriptions, while visually presented with thumbnails and icons, can become cumbersome to read in this format. A scrollbar-based approach might offer a more streamlined and accessible way to browse game details.

The system seems to categorize games into just “promoted games” and “random games.” This categorization falls short of the existing Roblox discovery system in terms of both transparency and search diversity. The criteria for “random” game recommendations remain unclear, as does the process for a game to be “sponsored.” Is game promotion limited to specific games or accessible via a Roblox API?

A robust game discovery system should incorporate fundamental features like curated sorts, whether automatic or manual. Roblox currently offers this with “Trending” and similar sorts on its Discover page. Expanding to Genres, Tags, and Filters would be a logical next step. While the current system introduces a randomizer, it ultimately leaves users desiring a more comprehensive and feature-rich discovery experience.

It’s important to consider the technical implications as well. Loading numerous game elements in this physical discovery space could potentially strain system resources and lead to game crashes for some users. Implementing a cap or a Level of Detail (LOD) system might be necessary to mitigate such risks.
