Honoring a Legacy: JSU Names President’s Office After Longest Serving President

Jacksonville State University has officially dedicated its President’s Office to Dr. Clarence William Daugette, Sr., the institution’s longest serving president. In a unanimous decision on December 18, the Board of Trustees declared the suite, prominently located in Bibb Graves Hall, as “The Dr. Clarence William Daugette, Sr. Presidential Suite,” a lasting tribute to his remarkable leadership.

Dr. Daugette’s profound connection with Jacksonville State University spans decades, beginning in 1894 when he joined the Normal School faculty as a science instructor. Born in Monroe County in 1873, he had previously cultivated his academic foundation at Auburn, securing Bachelor and Master of Science degrees. His early career at Jacksonville took a personal turn when he married Annie Rowan Forney, the sister of then-President Jacob Forney, in 1897. Following his brother-in-law’s resignation, Dr. Daugette ascended to the presidency in 1899, marking the start of an era of unprecedented growth and stability for the institution. Even while leading the Normal School, he continued to pursue his own scholarly endeavors, including studies at the University of Chicago and earning an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Alabama, showcasing his commitment to both leadership and learning.

The Daugette legacy extends through generations at JSU. Dr. Daugette’s son, Col. Clarence W. Daugette, Jr., was an alumnus and served on the Board of Trustees, further cementing the family’s dedication to the university. This commitment continues with Mr. Clarence William Daugette, III, a 1974 business graduate and current Board of Trustees member. His recent generous donation of $66,000 to the University Foundation’s “Deeply Rooted. Future Driven” campaign directly facilitated the naming of the President’s Office in honor of his grandfather, the longest serving president.

“We truly appreciate the Daugette family and what they mean to this institution,” stated JSU President Don Killingsworth, highlighting the deep gratitude for the family’s enduring support.

Beyond the newly dedicated Presidential Suite, Dr. Daugette’s contributions are further recognized through Daugette Hall and a dedicated scholarship, ensuring his impact on Jacksonville State University remains prominent for years to come. These honors serve as a continuous reminder of the transformative leadership of JSU’s longest serving president and the lasting legacy of the Daugette family.
