Los Angeles County is currently facing a critical housing emergency in the wake of the recent devastating wildfires. The aftermath of these fires has led to a significant increase in the need for housing across the region, and available rental units are being filled rapidly.
In response to this urgent crisis, we are reaching out to our community to ask for immediate assistance. Property owners are urged to update their listings with the most current availability to reflect the rapidly changing situation. Renters who are searching for housing are requested to inform us if they inquire about a unit that has already been rented, enabling us to maintain the most accurate availability information possible.
For those impacted by the wildfires and in need of support, a comprehensive list of resources and assistance programs is available at the Wildfire Recovery Resources website: Wildfire Recovery Resources
Property Owners: The Red Cross Needs Your Support
The American Red Cross is actively working to support hundreds of families who have tragically lost their homes and been displaced due to the recent wildfires. In this critical time, they are appealing to our property owner community for vital assistance.
Specifically, the Red Cross is seeking contact information for property owners who have available one- and two-bedroom rental units. These units are needed within a 10-mile radius of the areas most affected by the Eaton Fire and the Palisades Fire. It is important to note that renters who are assisted through this initiative will be fully prepared to meet the standard financial obligations expected of any renter in the private market.
If you are a property owner with a vacant unit that meets these criteria and are willing to help, please contact the Los Angeles County Development Authority (LACDA) directly. You can reach them by phone at (626) 586-1570 or (626) 586-1565, or by email at [email protected]. Your contact information will be promptly forwarded to the Red Cross, who will then coordinate directly with you. LACDA staff are available to assist you Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm, and Spanish-speaking staff are also on hand to provide support.
It is crucial to understand that this is a separate initiative from the Section 8 program, and no subsidies or rental assistance will be provided by LACDA as part of this effort. Any rental agreements established will be considered private market rentals, directly between the property owner and the prospective tenant.
Your willingness to participate in this effort will provide immediate and essential housing for families in desperate need and demonstrate the strength of community support in Los Angeles. By offering your available units, you are becoming a critical part of the solution and embodying the spirit of Social Serve Los Angeles – neighbors helping neighbors in times of crisis.
Thank you for considering this urgent request and for being a vital part of our community’s response to this emergency. Your generosity and support can make a profound difference in the lives of those affected by these devastating wildfires.
