Los Angeles County is facing a critical housing shortage in the wake of recent devastating wildfires. The urgency for housing solutions has escalated, and available units are being rented rapidly. This situation demands immediate attention from both property owners and renters to streamline the process of connecting those displaced with available housing options.
The County of Los Angeles is actively working to provide resources and assistance to those affected by the wildfires. For up-to-date information and support, individuals are encouraged to visit the Wildfire Recovery Resources page. This centralized hub offers crucial information and guidance during this challenging time.
In a significant effort to address the displacement caused by the fires, the Red Cross is collaborating with the Los Angeles County property owner community. They are specifically seeking property owners who have one- and two-bedroom rental units available within a 10-mile radius of the Eaton Fire and Palisades Fire perimeters. This initiative aims to provide immediate housing solutions through what can be termed “Social Serve Housing,” where private market rentals are facilitated to meet urgent community needs during emergencies. It’s important to note that renters assisted through this program will be responsible for covering rental expenses, aligning with standard private market practices.
Property owners with available units are urged to contact the Los Angeles County Development Authority (LACDA) at (626) 586-1570 or (626) 586-1565, or via email at [email protected]. Contact information will then be relayed to the Red Cross to facilitate connections with individuals and families in need of housing. Staff are available to assist property owners Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm, and Spanish-speaking assistance is also available. This program is distinct from the Section 8 initiative, and the LACDA will not provide rental subsidies or assistance. All rentals will be considered private market transactions between property owners and tenants.
Your participation in providing “social serve housing” during this emergency is invaluable. By offering available rental units, property owners can play a crucial role in helping our community recover and rebuild after these devastating wildfires. We appreciate your commitment to being part of the solution and supporting our neighbors in need.
