What Exactly is UGR-H&S?
The UGR-H&S is characterized by its use of tray pack entrees, starches, and desserts. These “heat and serve” components are the core of the system. Currently, there are five distinct breakfast menus and ten different lunch/dinner menus available, offering variety and nutritional balance. Importantly, there are no minimum order requirements, meaning even single module orders are accepted, providing flexibility for different unit sizes and mission needs. The UGR-H&S is efficiently packaged into modules of three boxes, with two 50-soldier menus fitting on a single pallet tier. This unitization means one tier provides 100 meals, and a full pallet (four tiers) contains 400 meals, simplifying logistics and distribution. Each UGR-H&S module weighs approximately 124.5 lbs and occupies 5.25 cubic feet.
What’s Included in a Heat and Serve UGR-H&S?
The “heat and serve” aspect of the UGR-H&S comes from its traypack components. These are thermally processed, pre-prepared, and shelf-stable foods packaged in hermetically sealed, half-size steam table containers. These containers are designed to function as both heating pans and serving trays, further simplifying field operations. Beyond the heat and serve traypacks, each of the 5 breakfast and 10 lunch/dinner menus includes all food items and disposable serving ware (cups, compartment trays, and trash bags) required to feed 50 people. The only exceptions are mandatory supplements like bread, milk, and cold cereal, and optional enhancements such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and salads, which can be added based on availability and mission requirements. Each UGR-H&S menu, when combined with mandatory enhancements, is designed to provide an average of 1450 kilocalories per serving, with a nutritional breakdown of approximately 14% protein, 32% fat, and 54% carbohydrates.
Shelf Life and Ordering Information
The UGR-H&S “heat and serve” option boasts a minimum shelf life of 18 months when stored at 80 degrees Fahrenheit. This extended shelf life is crucial for military logistics and ensuring food availability in diverse operational environments. To order UGR-H&S modules, each individual meal module has a National Stock Number (NSN). Requisitions are processed following the standard supply procedures for each Military Service. For specific ordering inquiries, the designated point of contact can be reached at (215) 737-4360, DSN: 444-4360. It is important to note that Operational Rations (including UGRs and MREs) are exclusively sold to the U.S. Military Services and other authorized federally-funded agencies. Sales to the private sector, including individuals, businesses, or other organizations, are not permitted. Detailed information can be found in the Customer Eligibility Policy.
Order Lead Times
For orders within the Continental United States (CONUS), the typical lead time is 7 to 10 business days. Orders for Hawaii and Alaska require a longer lead time of 45 to 60 days. For locations Outside the Continental United States (OCONUS), the ordering lead time is 60 to 90 days. These lead times should be factored into logistical planning to ensure timely delivery of UGR-H&S modules for military operations.
