WEST POINT, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University men’s tennis team showcased their competitive spirit and skill at the Army Invitational, concluding play on Sunday afternoon in West Point. While the focus was on overall performance, the strength of their Tennis Serves, a critical element in any match, was evident throughout the weekend.
The doubles duos proved to be a particular highlight for the Bonnies. Chase Cahill-Welsh and Connor Turner demonstrated excellent teamwork and execution, securing two impressive victories. Similarly, Hugo Cochlin and Alex Kim formed a formidable partnership, also claiming two wins for St. Bonaventure. Anargha Ganguly and Luke Ollivierre added to the doubles success, triumphing in their single match of the weekend against Army’s Preston Achter and Michael Zhang with a score of 6-3. These doubles results underscore the importance of well-placed and powerful serves in establishing dominance at the net and controlling the flow of the game.
In singles competition, Hugo Cochlin led the way for the Bonnies, earning two individual wins. Alex Kim and Connor Turner each contributed a singles victory as well. While the weekend presented challenges against tough opponents, these wins highlight the individual talent and resilience within the St. Bonaventure squad. The ability to deliver consistent and effective tennis serves in singles play is paramount for dictating points and securing crucial advantages.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Head Coach Mike Bates noted, “The men have played good doubles this year while also trying out different combinations, seeing which one’s work. We are battling some injuries but seeing some bright spots from some of the underclassmen.” Coach Bates’ comments suggest a positive trajectory for the team, particularly in doubles, where the synergy between players and the effectiveness of their combined serves are clearly paying off. The development of underclassmen further strengthens the team’s future prospects.
Looking ahead, the Bonnies are set to compete at the ITA Regionals in Cambridge, Mass., starting Friday, Oct. 17. This upcoming tournament will provide another opportunity for the team to refine their skills, including their tennis serves, and build upon the experiences gained at the Army Invitational.
